NISP CONNECT 25K Awards

Last night was the awards dinner for the annual NISP CONNECT “25K Awards”.

“A collaboration between Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP), the University of Ulster and Queen’s University, Belfast, NISP CONNECT acts as an ‘honest, neutral broker’ within the region. We encourage entrepreneurship in academia (£25k Award) and help companies get early stage funds (halo).”

There were 10 finalists across four categories, two in the Digital Media field:

  • Disability Heroes - offering innovative E-Learning Tools to enhance disability awareness [UU] - by Kyle Boyd
  • The Big Word Project - the project employs viral marketing to spread word about a product or project. It is a new and innovative way of promoting your website [UU]. - by Lee Munroe and Paddy Donnelly
  • The winner of the Digital Media category was “Disability Heroes”. It’ll be interesting to see where Kyle, Lee and Paddy end up after this - the whole point of the awards ceremony is to open doors.

Conversations around the table and in the Pumphouse before and after included a new film project for the Paint Hall in 2009 (with an innovative delivery model), possible collaborations between Digital Circle, University of Ulster and local digital content businesses (Banjax, Infurious) and a raft of potential startups which just need time to forment and discover a business model.
