Resolve to Do Digital Better in 2012

It’s the third week into the New Year already, so how are we all doing with our New Year’s resolutions? Finding it hard to keep those hands off that chocolate cake? (I know I am) Well here’s one resolution we feel will be easier to keep and will benefit your business in 2012- do digital better. The first few months of the year are the perfect time to review all things digital to ensure your online presence will work to the best of its ability.

Here are some suggestions to help you along;

Review your Google Analytics

This will help you separate the wheat from the chaff with regards to what is working for your site, i.e. which content is producing the higher click through rates and which aren’t. If links aren’t being clicked, think about their content; is the copy relevant to your visitors? Is the layout of your website the best it could be? It may need restructured to make the information more available to your visitors.

Review your content

Review your existing articles, and new stories to make sure that the most up-to-date and relevant content is available. This should be a task which is never scribbled off your to-do-list as the more frequently your website has fresh and engaging content the better your SEO will become and the higher likelihood that visitors will return to your site and new visitors will find it. These tasks are often left on the backburner but can often be fundamental to the success of your digital strategy. Why not create a monthly publishing schedule where you review all your online content in one go. Set a reminder on your computer or mobile to ensure you do it!

Try New Things

The digital world moves at a very fast pace, constantly providing you with lots of new and innovative ways to make you stand out from the crowd and reach more customers. Here are a couple of ideas to consider when putting together your digital marketing strategy for 2012.

Heard the phrase Search Engine Optimization but not sure what it’s all about? To get started why not try incorporating a number of keywords and phrases you feel people will input when wanting to find your services, into your news articles and general web content to see how that helps with your search engine rankings.

Social Media

Social Media can be a fantastic addition to your digital strategy. There are many advantages for creating an online social presence, including; gives you access to a larger audience, can strengthen your customer base and in the case of Twitter, you can keep an eye on what the competition is up to (without them knowing). Before you take your first step into the world of social media think carefully about what you want to get out of it and if that particular medium is suitable for your company. More importantly though only take the plunge, if you have the committed resources to dedicate to it.

Integrate your offline communications with your online

If you have any sort of online presence whether it be website, blog or a social media presence always ensure the URL’s are displayed on all of your offline communications, including; point of sale, advertisements, editorials etc.

QR codes are another great way to achieve this. These are simple to create and again can be added to any of your communications. When scanned with a smart phone, visitors are automatically directed to your website, Facebook/ Twitter page etc.- why not give that a try this year?

Invest in Email Marketing

Sure why would we spend money on that for it to sit unopened in an inbox? If this was the case then why does Microsoft send 20 million email marketing pieces per month? There must be some merit to it.

Here are just some potential advantages an e-marketing campaign could bring to your business this year;

•As we all know it can be very hard to measure the performance of some marketing campaigns- email marketing is one such strategy where it is easy to measure your return and results.

•It helps to drive additional traffic to your website, social media sites etc.

•Cross sell your products and informs readers about services and products that they may not already know about.

As we all know resolutions are good in theory but when it actually comes down to it, are often not implemented and in the business world more specifically this is mostly down to a lack of resources available.
