This all day event, hosted by the School of Media Film and Journalism, is a short taster session and introduction to using Drone Technology for film and photography. The aim of this course is to help participants familiarise themselves with the tools and technologies required to work with drones for filmmaking and photographic work.
The event will be held in the Faculty of Arts new £6M building (i-block) on the Coleraine Campus, and will work specifically with the DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone. Participants will work in groups of 2 to allow hands-on activities. Participants, under guidance from staff, will complete a series of introductory, hands-on activities to familiarise themselves with the planning, equipment, processes and technical workflow needed to undertake drone work.
This workshop is designed as an introductory session, and participating SMEs will be encouraged to consider further work with the Faculty of Arts on a larger Knowledge Transfer funding application (Competitive Connected 3) which will be a 6 month program with full UAV accreditation for commercial use. The follow on sessions to help grow the practice in their businesses and promote good working practices in Northern Ireland.
This introductory workshop will consist of an introductory talk, with examples of good practice, followed by an introduction to the software needed to control the quadcopter drones, then a series of outdoor activities to help participants experiment with the technology and understand the benefits and limitations. The production workflow will be discussed, covering lightbridge technology, 4K workflows, post-production to remove barrelling and lens distortion and approaches to working with both still and moving images to retain quaility and image integrity.
Alongside the hands-on activities, there will be a display of Drone Technologies by Northern Ireland based company The Drone Factory who are an official dealer for DJI in Northern Ireland. They will be showcasing other models such as the Inspire 1, and the S900 drones.
*these workshops are subject to adequate flying conditions, and alternative activities will be arranged if outside flight is not possible. Please bring waterproofs, and sensible footwear for outside use on grass.
